EXCLUSIVE - HISTORY OF HIPHOP IN NIGERIA

The evolution of Hip hop in Nigeria could be traced to the late 1990s. On the mainstream were such groups as The Remedies, Maintain, Trybesmen and single acts like Rasqie Mono.
In other parts of Nigeria, underground groups such as Swatroots, Coal City Finest and Tuck Tyte could be heard representing the game as much as possible. Mainstream hiphop at this time till the early 2000’s was characterized by a lot of Afro beat, native language and junk rap.

Owing to heavy radio rotations and publicity, these misrepresentations of the art dominated for a long time. In 2003, the genre was revolved by the release of ‘Ehen’ by Ruggedman. A diss song that sent all the so called mainstream hiphop acts to the cleaners. From this time on, Hip hop was born again.
A new dawn that woke every sleeping head and sent them back to the studios. Ruggedman released a few other controversial records addressing sternly a lot of issues in the Nigerian Hip hop scene.

This rebirth of Hip hop lowered the activation energy and there was an explosive influx of cats into the game. The appreciation of Hip hop grew across the populace and hiphop heads could confidently walk into radio stations to present their songs for airplay. Rap shows started getting hosted on some radio stations and the love for the art increased tremendously.

Hardcore hiphop was still making its way to the mainstream and this saw the rise of cats likeModenine (a member of the Swatroots). With his first single ‘Elbow Room’, he redefined the game and took Hip hop to its roots. By the release of his debut project ‘Malcolm IX’ , he reiterated the place of poetry, word play, punchlines and metaphors in hiphop articulation. He showcased the elements of Hip hop namely emceeing, dee-jaying, break dance and graffiti were also present in his videos. His subsequent projects maintained that standard of serving undiluted Hip hop music. Modenine is generally referred to as the king of underground hiphop in Nigeria. He succeeded in putting hardcore or underground rap music on the mainstream.

Today, we have a lot of names to reckon with in the Nigerian Hip hop music industry: The Thoroughbreds, Dagrin (RIP),Terry tha Rapman, Pherowshuz, Overdose, Eldee the Don, Sauce Kid, Blaise, Freestyle, M.I, Sasha, Gino, Naeto-C, Jimmy Jatt, Ikechukwu, Str8 Buttah, MC tha Preacha, Boogey, Paybac, Zee, Camper, Slay to mention but a few.

Also worthy of mention are radio hosts/O.A.Ps who have contributed immensely to the elevation of the game. They include:- JAJ the Mecca Don, Mike Magic, Eldee XL, HNIC Dr. Gee, Chucks da Spaceman, Kemistry, Andre Blaze, S-Dot e.t.c.

Thumbs up to the beat makers and dee-jays who have made it happen.
Bless!

RAPPER OF THE MONTH - MCskill Tha Preacha + EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

MCskill ThaPreacha, Real names 'Olawale Aremo' is a Real Hip-Hop artiste, Writer and Graphics Artist based in West Africa, Nigeria.

Like most MCs in the game, he started rapping at an early age. He grew bumping his head to the rhythm and rhymes of the likes of *Big Snoop Dogg* & *The Notorious B.I.G* before diverting his full attention to *KRS-One*, who taught him the A-Z of ‘*real hip-hop’* and mutated him from a rapper to the MC he is today.

His debut mixtape, titled “*Metaphysical Induction*” was released in February 2011 with guest artistes such as Synik (Zimbabwe), Jetlag (Texas), Wale, Tempo etc all showing mad skillz on it... The
Mixtape was hosted by *STORMATIQUE*.

His follow up mixtape titled **Get Dope Or Die Wack**also hosted by *Stormatique* was released in january 2012 and it generated mad buzz both online and on radio having over 15,000 downloads in its first week alone.

MCskill ThaPreacha kick-started 2013 with an EP with PH city MC "Magic Man" titled 'Project-X'  The EP which is hosted by some of the finest Hip-Hop producers around [Stormatique, Teck-Zilla of Str8buttah & M.P of Nutty 2] is the definition of real Hip-Hop.

Presently working on another EP titled "Free Throws" which will be released this summer.

With a perfect combo of an MC / WRITER /GRAPHICS ARTIST. MCskill ThaPreacha is a complete package you would definitely wanna keep an eye on in 2013 and beyond.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

@iQuoteNaijaRap: How long have you been writing and performing, and when did you first realize this is what you were meant to do?

@McThaPreacha: I started writing wayback when I was 13.. It was probably wack though (laughs). And I started performing officially in 2010. I knew I was destined for this when I started listening to my mentor "KRS-One" cos he made me believe.

@iQuoteNaijaRap : Have your music changed  someone’s life?

@McThaPreacha: I get lots of positive comments about my music so I would say yes my music has changed not just someone but people's lives.

@iQuoteNaijaRap : Can you give a specific example of how your music changed or influenced someone’s life for the better ?

@McThaPreacha: Yeah, the notable one has to be when I released "Hold Me Back" in 2012. The 3rd verse happened to change someone's life. A lady (names witheld) who's been on drugs and lived a rough life. She was going to give up but fortunately that short verse saved her and its a really great thing when someone you've never met send a short video to ur email thanking you for what you've done in their life. That's definitely one of the highlights of my career.

@iQuoteNaijaRap : There are many who feel rap music has morphed into a negative stereotype glorifying gangster life, greed, & misogyny, a departure from the inner-city rallying cry espoused by iconic 80′s pioneers like NWA and RUN-DMC. You on the other hand appear vested in representing and addressing African’s struggles with inspirational messages of hope and youth empowerment. What were the experiences and influences that shaped you as an artist and continue to inform your music?

@McThaPreacha: Yeah, today's Hip Hop is something of a nightmare and its so so sad. I had a very tough childhood even though 99.9percent of close pals would never believe that for some reasons. My experiences then and what I have turn out to be made me realize we can actually build something from nothing, I'm basically influenced by the struggles in the inner city and the teacha KRS-One. He made me the MC I am today.

@iQuoteNaijaRap :  If you had a choice of any artist to collaborate with, who would that be?

@McThaPreacha: The Teacha "KRS-One".

@iQuoteNaijaRap :  Any particular reason why ?

@McThaPreacha: Cos he's the "Greatest MC Of All Time", he's influenced me positively. No other MC comes close.

@iQuoteNaijaRap :  What inspired the “Tribute To Modenine” joint?

@McThaPreacha: First off, I gotta say I got pissed off by all the tribute tracks been made for dead people cos while this people were alive nobody cared! Instead,  they posted curses on there pages. Using the Diva "Goldie" (May she rest in peace) as an example. They cursed her so much. When she died the same people cursing her paid tribute. Doesn't make sense to me. Secondly, its Hip Hop appreciation week and we are meant to honor legends and ancestors. Modenine is an African Hip Hop legend that deserves respect. Not everyone likes him but its normal. Its been said that "a man without enemies/haters is a man without value". I had to pay tribute to a legend just like KRS paid tribute to NAS, Talib Kweli to Lauryn Hill, Nas to Rakim, Kanye to Jay-Z and so on. This is Hip Hop! I expect more Tribute tracks to be done for the living now that I've started it.

@iQuoteNaijaRap :  Who do you listen to outside of rap music? (rock, pop, electro, or otherwise)

@McThaPreacha: Afrobeat, Reggae, a little bit of Rock and Juju music.

@iQuoteNaijaRap :  What would be the most rewarding thing you could hope to achieve in your career and any particular reason why?

@McThaPreacha: To be inducted into the Hip Hop hall of fame. Its a dream for every Hip Hop artiste.

@iQuoteNaijaRap :  So are we expecting an Album soon?

@McThaPreacha: Yeah, definitely! But for now y'all should cop my previous projects "Metaphysical Induction, Get Dope Or Die Wack, Project-X" and anticipate the "Free Throws EP" this summer.

Yo! y'all can download the Tribute To Modenine here, also simply click on any of his project to download, and like he said, y'all got to keep an eye on him, his a living masterpiece-time bomb.

You can leave a comment,  your views or other Qs you many wanna ask about MC Skill Tha Preacha, Bless!
